Call for applications – Youth digital security training 2020

The Transformative Leaders Network- Africa is a youth led, youth focused organization that works to mainstream young people’s participation in and promotion of human rights, good governance practices with a vision of a society where the leadership upholds the ideals of social justice and gender equality. Over the past years, TRANET has been amplifying young people’s voices and fostering protection and support for youth human rights defenders and organizations.

The recent past has witnessed an upsurge of  youth-led rights groups springing up in Uganda and it is apparent they are susceptible to cyber/digital -attacks from either within or without.    Cyber security laws and policies have a direct impact on human rights, particularly the right to privacy, freedom of expression, and the free flow of information.  In Uganda, Policymakers have crafted several national policies with the intention of protecting the Internet and other information communication technologies (ICTs) systems against malevolent actors. However, many of these policies are exceedingly all-encompassing and ill-defined, and lack clear checks and balances or other democratic accountability mechanisms, which can lead to human rights abuses and can stifle innovation. For instance, extreme cyber security laws can be used to censor dissidents, monitor communications, and criminalize online users for expressing their views. That notwithstanding, in Uganda, many youth led human rights organization whose specialty is to defend and  promotes rights face restrictions of reach, expertise, assets, and steadiness in engagement in this area.

To address this, Transformative Leader’s Network- Africa (TRANET –AFRICA) will conduct digital rights training for youth led- organizations/groups in February of 2020.    The training will   incorporate all of the innumerable attack vectors that can be exploited against youth human rights defenders organizations and individuals from outside the firewall.

The training aims at strengthening the digital skills of youth organizations, improving the digital security of youth organizations, to establish a rapid response mechanism to support youth organizations in case of emergency attacks, secure digital communications and how to counter digital threats among others.
