An Appeal to Help Save a life of Harriet Kobugabe
Harriet Kobugabe, a budding entrepreneur, dynamic youth activist very instrumental in the campaigns and advocacy for good governance, accountability, gender equality and gender responsive governance, was attached by her then fiancé in 2011 at her home in Bukasa resulting into a crack on her chest that left her in an ailing situation.
Since the incident her condition has never normalized despite undergoing 4 surgeries at International Hospital Kampala (IHK) where she was first treated immediately after the incident. NTV Uganda aired her story on 22nd of September 2014 (LINK: http://www.ntvuganda.co.ug/productions/life-stories/life-stories-harriet-kobugabe-part-1#sthash.NvEq8kdu.SjiwkaRZ.dpbs).
In March this year Harriet was rushed to the IHK again where Doctors diagnosed her with ESOPHAGEAL CANCER which resulted from the crack failing to heal 3 years later. The doctors cautioned that once not operated on immediately the cancer was bound to get to advanced stages where it would be hard to heal.
Having exhausted her finances on treatment, a financially constrained Harriet appealed to friends for support. It is then that well-wishers contributed a total of at least 4 Million Ugandan Shillings towards her Thursday 29th May 2014 surgery at Nelson Medical Specialists.
The consultant surgeon Francis Nelson Owori ran a number of tests on her after the operation and recommended that she undergoes another operation within 3 months after that. He also suggested that Harriet should go to India for 2 main reasons.
- The crack in her chest has since 2011 failed to bridge, she has to undergo a surgery to screw her cracked chest so that it can bridge and then it will be easy to treat the Cancer. The screws will be removed after 1 year, by this time, the consultant believes the crack would have bridged.
- She has to undergo another surgery to help cut again the Cancerous area in her chest and burn the Cancer cells again, if she is to survive the Cancer.
Harriet's health has deteriorated again; her body has started swelling again just as it did before she was diagnosed with Cancer in March this year. It is for this reason that FOWODE and FOWODE Young Leaders Alumni Association appeal to you for support to raise the required UGX 190 Million to enable Harriet to undergo two operations in India.
