TRANET Africa holds bilateral talks with Urgent Action Fund- Africa

Mr. Ekakoro Fredrick Etoori with Ms. Connie Nawaigo
On Wednesday the 17th May 2017, the coordinator of Transformative leaders Network-Africa (TRANET) Mr. Ekakoro Fredrick Etoori hosted the Strategic Programmes Manager Urgent Action Fund-Africa at the TRANET Secretariat in Ntinda, Kampala. UAF-Africa is a pan-African, feminist and rapid response Fund that provides financial and technical resources to women’s rights organizations and activists across Africa who identify and respond to opportunities that advance and protect women’s human rights.

During the meeting, Ms. Connie Nawaigo gave an overview of their organization’s activities and mode of operations. Connie who is on a working visit to Uganda intends to identify institutions and individuals for possible strategic partnerships and funding.

The aim of the visit was to establish the emerging issues and challenges in the Uganda context and develop networks that would assist in intervention in relation to these issues and challenges as well as establish new connections.

In her submission she highlighted that, UAF-Africa operates round the clock, 365 days a year, to avail time-urgent and critical support to interventions that fall within the following categories: Defending the defenders of women’s rights, protecting women’s individual dignity, safety and autonomy, Justice and the rule of law, Economic Justice and or environmental Justice& Climate Change

While reacting to her presentation, Ekakoro thanked Connie for choosing to visit TRANET Africa and made an elaborate explanation on the operations and programming of the organization. He requested Urgent Action Fund to consider them since there are many emerging issues affecting youthful women especially at the work place.

“In the recent past, the media has been awash with claims of sexual exploitation, harassment and torture of some youthful female workers, but the culprits barely get apprehended. Whereas these and many other issues need rapid response, TRANET Africa is incapacitated and hence needs the support of institutions like UAF” he added further.

Last year, through the Youth Consortium on Labour Justice (YOCOLAJ), TRANET Africa then the FOWODE Young Leaders Alumni Association (FYLAA) did spearhead the campaign to educate the masses about the ills of labor exportation, task government to enact a law that regulates labour exportation and repatriate the stranded girls among others.

To date, it is not clear how far the government has gone with the law and the repatriation of the affected people. Recently the speaker of parliament hinted that a law is in the offing. This will be proved when document is seen.
